The 2024 Think! Road Safety SANFL State Country Championships at Victor Harbor

The Think! Road Safety SANFL State Country Championships will be held in our backyard at the Victor Harbor and Encounter Bay Ovals this year. The Southern Districts, made up of players from the Great Southern, Southern, and Kangaroo Island Leagues, will play their qualifying matches, both Men and Women, with two games each at Encounter Bay on Saturday morning.

The Championships are held over the weekend of July 12th to 14th, with two games to be played at Victor Harbor Oval on Friday evening. Eyre Peninsula will play the Southeast Zone, with the first of these games at 7:30 pm.

Over the weekend, a large number of players from all over the State converge on the City of Victor Harbor, booking a huge swath of accommodation in caravan parks and other holiday venues. Some 500 plus players, coaches, support staff, and officials will head to the coast for the duration of the Carnival.

Adding to that are families, supporters, and spectators looking to see some of the quality community footballers around the State. This augurs for a monster weekend, not only for the two local football clubs but also for local traders from the whole area.

Southern Districts have again appointed Gianni Petrucci from McLaren Districts and Phillip Marks from the SFL to coach the Women’s team. We are excited as both coaches bring a lot of passion and enjoyment to the role. Gianni has been a successful coach at club level and at SANFL level, while Phil has experience with SANFLW at West Adelaide and various club and association positions.

Zone football is a great opportunity for players to play with and against the best players in the State. The Country Championships can provide a pathway for young footballers to play at a higher level.

Players who have a successful carnival may also be selected to represent South Australia in the State Country Side, and this year, for the first time, this includes the women.

Two League teams from the SANFL will play a game for premiership points on Saturday afternoon at Victor Harbor Oval, with local zone club South Adelaide hosting North Adelaide in a game that should see a large number of supporters flock down to Victor Harbor for the day.

Southern Districts will hold combined GSFL and SFL player training on Tuesday, 9th July, at Victor Harbor for the Men at 6:30 pm and at Encounter Bay for the Women, also at 6:30 pm. On Thursday, 11th July, both sides will train at Encounter Bay – Women at 6:15 pm and Men at 7:00 pm.

Final selections will follow the Encounter Bay session along with a meal and jumper presentations.
