GSFL celebrates 100 years of footy (1923–2023)

Apr 15, 2023

Welcome to season 2023 and what an exciting year we have ahead with the GSFL celebrating its centenary year.

The competition is as healthy as it has ever been. Myponga have introduced a Women’s team and Yankalilla and Encounter Bay Women have formed a new identity called the Stingrays.

We will be defending the Barry Pilmore Cup when the Great Southern take on the Southern League on the June long weekend at Strathalbyn.

Round 11, July 1st, Centenary Round we will celebrate our 100 years with all teams playing their arch rivals. We have introduced a best-on-ground Centenary Medal for each game, for the Men’s and Women’s competition which will be chosen by the competing clubs.

I would like to thank Terry Corcoran and the previous GSFL Executive for the last 4 years. They managed to get us through Covid and brought the Country Championships to the region so they should be commended on their achievements.

I would like to assure you all that the new GSFL Executive team will be all about having a Clubs first approach. As I am aware it’s the Clubs that own the League so we are here to support all the Clubs and I hope that all Clubs can get behind the Executive.

Our new Executive Team is full of experience with either running their own businesses or being in an Executive role at a Club or at Association level.

Scott Bevan – Vice President
Andrew Batten – Secretary
Megan Sherry – Assistant Secretary
Gerry Loots – Treasurer
Leighton Huxtable – Junior Executive

Our roles are to uphold the laws of the game, be administrators of the League and to make sure Clubs are doing the right thing.

Our Association is a great product and has had great success in the past for being one of the best, if not the best Competition outside the SANFL and that was due to our Clubs all working in a common direction with each other.

Whether fierce and competitive on field but working together off field, I would like to see better relationships that not only improve Club-to-Club but with Clubs-to-GSFL Executive and Clubs-to- Executives and Partners.

We welcome Fleurieu Milk as our Principal Partner; a local business which really fits into our region and our branding.

We are excited to have Pro-Stock, Cleland Fine Foods and GJ Gardner Homes as Major Partners with N & H Giles as our Junior Partner.

In February we celebrated our Centenary Dinner at Adelaide Oval and welcomed 215 guests from all 10 Clubs, past and present players and officials. I would like to thank all those that attended the afternoon as it was a great success.

I would personally like to congratulate all 42 inductives who were inducted into our inaugural GSFL Hall of Fame. Moving forward we will form a committee to consider suitable candiates that their Club’s would like to nominate.

Good luck for the coming season and enjoy what should be a most entertaining year for the League.

Grant Levy

GSFL President
