Around the Grounds | GSFL Rd 9

Jun 20, 2024

While Victor Harbor FC made light work of yet another opponent – the Roos kicked 15 goals to Yankalilla’s one after halftime – it was Encounter Bay and McLaren Districts who most impressed in Round 9.

The Bays were well below their best away to McLaren prior to the Association clash, but the break appears to have served them well,  bouncing back against their more fancied opponent Myponga-Sellecks, led by goal scoring machine and playing-coach Darren Shillabeer.

While Shillabeer still managed to kick 6 of 7 goals for the Mudlarks, the Bays were just too clean and efficient around the ground – a team performance that would have Coach Wade Foggo quietly confident as they venture to Willunga in Rd 10 and look to consolidate a spot in the top 3.

McLaren Districts continue to build with another polished performance against the ever-present Langhorne Creek. The Hawks kept the undefeated Roos honest in Round 9 before fading in the last and would have fancied themselves against the reigning premiers, but the game was essentially over when McLaren flew out of the blocks kicking 7 goals to the Creek’s one in the first quarter.

To their credit coach Galbraith’s Hawks didn’t throw-in the towel and it was a much tighter contest after quarter-time kicking 10 goals to McLaren’s 11 – but the damage had been done.

McLaren’s Brett Ellis was best-a-field with 6 goals, while Jackson Dalitz kicked 5 for the Hakes

Around the grounds, Willunga made light work of the Magpies at the Mouth. The Dees’ Ryan Sherry kicked 11 while Strathalbyn held on at the Kennel. Ben Simounds kicked 4 for the Roosters and while Dogs’ spearhead Tom Pinyon countered with 4 of his own, Strath kicked 4 goals in the last to win by 3 goals and remain in touch with the top 5. However Round 10 sees the Roosters travel to Victor to face the undefeated Roos.

In other games for Round 10, Yank will quietly fancy themselves against the Dogs at home, the Mudlarks will have a true measure of where they sit when McLaren come to the Reservoir while the Creek host the winless Pies at Hawk Park.
